C.W. Stoneking - Ragged And Dirty

This is my main blues man in Australia. C.W. Stoneking is the son of American parents who were teachers in the country up in the Northern Territory. I got to hear him play over in Fremantle at a small venue late last year. C.W. is a gas, gas, gas.....Check him out. He does country blues with a lot of N'Arlins rhythms thrown in here and there. Plays banjo

Steven Shorter / Paul Jones "Privilege" (1967)

From Peter Watkins's 1967 film "Privilege," Watkins's subtly satirical take on Beatlemania and a vision of a totalitarian future in which the Church & State use pop icons to induce conformity in the public. In this clip, official govt. pop icon Steven Shorter performs a newly Christianized version of a song seen earlier in the movie, and attempts a laying on of hands to cure the infirm...

Social-darwinism is on the rise amongst the politically disaffected...

In 1873, a wise Karl Marx wrote a parody -- a reductio ad absurdum --
of the anarchist arguments and added (my emphasis):

"It cannot be denied that if the apostles of political indifferentism
were to express themselves with such clarity, the working class would
make short shrift of them and would resent being insulted by these
doctrinaire bourgeois and displaced gentlemen, who are so stupid or so
naive as to attempt to deny to the working class *any real means* of
struggle. ***For all arms with which to fight must be drawn from
society as it is*** and the fatal conditions of this struggle have the
misfortune of not being easily adapted to the idealistic fantasies
which these doctors in social science have exalted as divinities,
under the names of Freedom, Autonomy, Anarchy."

http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1873/01/indifferentism.htm

I know that this flies in the face of most 'anarchist' thought. Many self-described anarchists in the USA see non-voting as a measure of how hip peopl...

Do humans have instincts?

But to trace out the history of the whole period, to say who was fighting whom at any given moment, would have been utterly impossible, since no written record, and no spoken word, ever made mention of any other alignment than the existing one. At this moment, for example, in 1984 (if it was 1984), Oceania was at war with Eurasia and in alliance with Eastasia. In no public or private ut...

Shine a Light

Haw! Bill Clinton handshaking the Stones. Hillary is there too. Cut to
Bill and Hillary holding hands as they walk across the stage. It's a
back shot, low, beagle high angle.

Scorsese doing the Stones! Wow. He did the blues. He did Dylan and now
the Stones. The man knows his music; I mean, on top of being the best
film director alive. And this time, it's a concert at a relatively
small venue of the Beacon Theatre, as the boys play in New Yawk City
for a Clinton charity.

The band starts with "Jumpin' Jack Flash' and baby, it's a gas, gas,
gas. Mick moves like he's half his age. Probably has something to do
with running six miles a day. Keith is a bit slow and wiry, cracking a
sly smile. Old Charlie's good, as usual and Ronnie slides on his guitar
like a coke bottle down a ten mile incline.

The band looks like it has weathered many a 'crossfire hurricane'--you
can see it in their now craggy faces, especially when Scorsese directs
a cut to clips of those smooth, inn...

Utah Phillips, Mark Ross and Butte Montana

Hobo storyteller Utah Phillips talks about how he and Mark Ross, from New York City, came to Butte, Montana. Utah died this week. I remember Utah as big barrel of a bearded man, ready to sing at the drop of a hat. He attended the IWW Assembly in San Franciso back in 1990 and and the Wobbly Doxology to kick things off...."Praise boss for chunks of overtime...." And then, we all sang "Dump the bosses off your back." Judi Bari was there, alive amongst us then.

An intelligent analysis about what's really going on in Iraq...

Moreover he knew that his militia was the main target for the increased American troops. So he
imposed a "freeze," often mistranslated as a ceasefire his powerful
militia so that he could "reform" it. The Americans had declared that
the Mahdi Army would be targeted so the Mahdi Army largely withdrew
to wait for the eventual reduction in American troops. The Mahdi Army
was also ill disciplined and out of control, so Muqtada took
advantage of the opportunity to consolidate control of his men and
root out the unruly ones. When the Mahdi Army Freeze began there was
an immediate and huge drop in violence, which shows just how
responsible they were for the violence.

At the same time the Sunn...
